Portland Community College Boosts Student Pass and Completion Rates with SmarterServices™, Start Guide for Online Learning

Prior to 2012, Portland Community College (PCC) Distance Education Department did not have a mandatory orientation for students wishing to take online classes. It led to some students being ill-prepared and mediocre retention rates. Most importantly, there were gaps between student success and completion rates between online and campus classes. This gap demanded attention.

About the College
Portland Community College–founded in 1961 in Arnold, Maryland– is a public, two-year college. Conveniently located between Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC; the college is minutes away from Maryland’s state capital of Annapolis. Beginning in the Fall of 1996, the college offered its first online course in the computer sciences. From there, the institution’s distance-learning catalog has grown significantly. Students can now complete six degrees, eighteen certificates, and numerous letters of recognition in a fully online format. In addition, the college also offers a comprehensive array of online continuing-education courses for distance learners.
